Women, Girls & Cricket: A Thousand Threads
Drop-in research session by Women & Theatre at Bearwood Community Hub, 21 October, 2-3.30pm

Inspired by Women’s Cricket featuring in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 2022, Birmingham based theatre company Women and Theatre (W&T) will produce a new intergenerational community production about women, girls, & cricket. Performances will take place at three outdoor locations – in Ward End, Edgbaston & Smethwick – involving different community casts of diverse ages & backgrounds. These casts will then come together for larger flagship shows at Midlands Arts Centre in July 2022.

W&T Artistic Director, Janice Connolly (aka Barbara Nice), will be at Bearwood Community Hub to speak to local women & girls about the project, as well as any stories, memories or associations with cricket, or any commonwealth countries. You don’t have to love cricket to come and talk to us! You will also be able to find out more information about how to get involved in the project as a Community Cast member with performances taking place in Smethwick in May/June 2022 and the flagship performance at Midlands Arts Centre in July 2022.

A Thousand Threads will represent local women & girls’ experiences of cricket – playing it & watching it; in schools, parks, at cricket grounds or on TV; as young children & adults; in the West Midlands & elsewhere in the world. The piece will also reflect broader themes; about their lives, concerns, opportunities & aspirations, & women & girls’ different experiences across the Commonwealth.

An audio soundtrack, encompassing the narrative of the show, music & other sound design, will form the basis of live performances in community spaces. Dance & movement will also play a key part; choreographed sequences showing swarms of fans descending to watch a match; a spinning ball moving across the field, bringing stories & characters to life.

Come and join us on Thursday the 21st for a cup of tea and a natter about your experiences, views or memories!

Please let us know you are planning to come by calling Sally on 07599 595 514 or emailing hello@bearwood.cc.
